Play dough is such a great rainy day activity for kids big and small. Not only is it a lot of fun, but it also allows them to develop fine motor skills and get creative in so many ways.
Although there are some great all natural choices out there if you prefer to buy your play dough, it is very easy to make it yourself too! A great thing about homemade play dough is that kids can take part in almost every step of making it, including mixing the ingredients and kneading it (the heating on the stove is an adult's job). It's also very inexpensive to make - it's basically mostly flour and salt after all.
DIY Play dough
In a big pot, simply mix:
2 cups all purpose flour
2 cups warm water
1 cup salt
2 tbs vegetable oil
1 tbs creme of tartar
1>> Place pot on stove and heat on low/medium. Stir often until dough starts to lump and pull away from the sides of the pot.
2>> Allow to cool and then knead until smooth.
3>> Add color, scent and texture to dough if desired. You can get food color at the store, or you can make your own. Get creative! Knead in some cocoa powder, glitter (this one is a favorite!), cinnamon, rice, juice from beets/carrots/spinach - you name it!
Store in airtight containers and take it out whenever you are having an indoor kind of day.
When playing:
Help your child form letters and numbers with the dough. Make different "foods". Gather different types of material for the kids to create with, such as cookie cutters, pasta, straws, tooth picks, sea shells, feathers and pipe cleansers.
Comment below and tell us what you added to the play dough and what your kiddo made with it!
